JESUS AND MISSION IN THE FOUR GOSPELS
Mark’s Gospel
Who Jesus Is: Royal Son of God, Suffering Servant of God, Son of Man
As Royal Son, Jesus heals the afflicted and frees the oppressed, demonstrating God’s reign. As Suffering Servant, he humbly, obediently, boldly, faithfully, and lovingly does all that is necessary for our salvation. As Son of Man (Daniel 7:13-14), he rules over earthly powers and brings evil into judgment.
What Our Mission Is: Fruitful and Faithful Ministry
Our ministry is fruitful and faithful when we become mobile connecting points with the holy, living, loving, reigning God, helping people find atonement, healing, and other answers to their deepest prayers.
Matthew’s Gospel
Who Jesus Is: Emmanuel, New Moses
As Emmanuel, Jesus is God’s presence with his people for judgment, grace, protection, and providence. As New Moses, he is the master teacher for the church, the New Israel. Rather than settling for relative, cultural righteousness, Jesus calls for wholehearted pursuit of God’s perfect will. He does not lower the bar; he raises it.
What Our Mission Is: Radical Obedience
We are to live in Jesus’ presence as discerning and disciplined pursuers of a surpassing righteousness through which we may show a winning likeness to God, making disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Trinity and teaching radical obedience to Jesus’ commandments.
Luke’s Gospel (and The Acts of the Apostles)
Who Jesus Is: Spirit-Anointed Savior
Jesus demonstrates the redemptive love of God for the poor, the outcast, the oppressed, the women, the foreign, etc., using spiritual empowerment to challenge and overturn social conventions of merit and honor.
What Our Mission Is: Spirit-Led Evangelism
We are to be Spirit-empowered missionaries of a saving gospel for the whole world, living with generous and compassionate hearts. We are to maintain spiritual purity as we cross cultural boundaries for the sake of our mission.
John’s Gospel
Who Jesus Is: God Incarnate, the Way, the Truth, and the Life, Lamb of God
As God Incarnate, Jesus speaks and acts with the authority of God, but within the limits of a human body. Jesus’embodied love reveals both God and God’s way for us. Jesus’ crucifixion as Lamb of God is as much a part of his glory as is his resurrection.
What Our Mission Is: Loving Ambassadors of the New Birth
We must receive and believe in the name of Jesus and enter abundant and eternal life as spiritually reborn children of God. The Holy Spirit will guide us into the full truth about Jesus and will enable them to live and minister as he did. We are to love others as Jesus has loved us, with acts of caring and with words of saving truth.
